Brett Koolik releases his latest single, “Double Take.” Featuring dreamy melodies and seductive lyrics, the upbeat track emits an electric vibe that is sure to have everyone rocking on the dance floor.

“This song describes the feeling you get when you hear someone you think must be taken is single! The person is so beautiful and incredible and you just can't wrap your head around the fact that they're single and that they're interested in you. I wrote this during the pandemic and I wanted to make an upbeat song that people could dance to once everything opened back up again!” shares Koolik.

Originally from South Florida, Brett Koolik developed a passion for music at a young age. He wrote and self-produced his first song when he was 14 years old, and hasn’t stopped since. Writing and releasing his own material is an ambitious routine that Koolik has managed to maintain while keeping abreast of his studies in biomechanical engineering, at Vanderbilt University.

Embedded in the pulsating musical landscape of Nashville, Tennessee, Koolik spent the majority of his free time writing and recording music at an on-campus studio—an invaluable resource that he was able to utilize upon his acceptance into Vanderbilt’s fiercely competitive Media Immersion program. Throughout this essential time, he was able to cultivate his artistry, mastering elements of genres that spanned from hip-hop to EDM.

Vanderbilt’s atmosphere of spirited collaboration helped Koolik form significant connections. He  assembled a creative team proficient in merch design and social media marketing—vital tools that would be necessary for the success of his future musical career. During his sophomore year, Koolik’s hard work and dedication to his craft paid off when his 2017 single, “The One I Need,” reached the ears of a TV star and aspiring pop artist, who soon after enlisted Koolik as a collaborator for a duo project.

Another pivotal time in his sophomore year, was when Koolik became closely involved with the legendary Curb Center—an on-campus facility established by eminent music mogul, Mike Curb. There, he teamed up with a fellow scholar who specialized in videography, and the two crafted an ambitious joint project.

“We had an idea to pool our money and drive to LA from Miami, play a bunch of shows on the way, and film the whole thing for a documentary,” explains Koolik.

Their plan was thwarted though, when they crashed their car in Nashville. However, the resilient duo eventually made their way to Los Angeles, where they then drove the Pacific Coast Highway all the way to Portland. Koolik’s profound love for nature compelled him to base that particular leg of their journey around a stop in Redwoods; next, they headed east to catch Glacier and Yosemite National Parks.

Fueled by creative inspiration, Koolik and his videographer spent ten days in a cabin in Montana, instead of heading straight home. There, he wrote a complete body of work that conveyed the serene beauty of the Montana wilderness. Scheduled to head back to Montana, Koolik plans on releasing an entire project detailing his experiences, with partial proceeds benefiting environmental protection efforts.

Although Koolik’s music has been minimally self-promoted, his songs similar to “The One I Need” have gained recognition from industry heavy hitters, including Z3N—a producer with Electric Feel Entertainment, who’s worked with renowned artists like Post Malone and Louis Bell. He recently joined forces with Z3N and Brett “Beats” Bailey—a co-producer on Nicki Minaj’s gold-certified “Bed” feat. Ariana Grande—developing songs to pitch to pop stars.

His newfound collaborators have nurtured his talents for toplining and production, and identify Koolik as a rising triple-threat artist, in the manner of Jack Antonoff or Ryan Tedder—whose accelerating musical growth is limitless.

Speaking on his experiences, Koolik shares, “I feel like I’m getting an amazing crash course on how to make a great song…In the past few months alone, I’ve become so much more aware of what makes a strong chorus, and how to create something that grabs your attention right off the bat.”

With a set of potential placements in the works, Koolik has also sharpened his entrepreneurial instincts and enhanced his understanding of the business side of the music industry—assets to his budding, next-level career.

While gearing up for his senior year at Vanderbilt, Koolik never let quarantine put a damper on his creative spirit. With tireless perseverance, he invested all of his royalties into acquiring new equipment for recording and production. He’s even converted a room in his parents’ house into a studio, where he spends his time creating new songs and collaborating remotely with other artists.

“Usually the best songs come to me when I’m going through something—like with “Beaches,” I was coming back from a girl’s house and felt really upset, and I knew I had to go to the piano and write,” says Koolik. “I had no idea what the song would be; I just needed to get out all the emotion I was feeling in the moment. And when you’re saying exactly what you’re feeling like that, there’s really no way for it to come out wrong.”

Looking ahead, Koolik is scheduled to release another song in December. He is currently in Nashville working on his debut EP, which hopefully will be ready by spring of next year.
