Tez Cadey (@tezcadeymusic) - One of France’s rising Electronic Artists is on a mission to blow away his audience with his hit EDM tracks and upcoming projects with other noteworthy artists. When it comes to electronic music, there are some songs that stick with a generation like his own hit ‘Seve,’ while others don’t experience a “breakthrough.” He joins us to tell us a little about his professional music journey today and how he took his career to new heights.
First and foremost, if you haven’t heard of Tez Cadey, go and listen to his hit single Seve and his latest release Talk To Me. We asked Tez who his biggest music and/or life inspirations were to which he replied, “I've been listening to many different stuff since I was a kid but concerning electronic music I still look up a lot to the works of Diplo and Calvin Harris. They both are great examples of creating without overthinking the process. It all comes straight from their guts and I find that really inspiring.” Sometimes the best ideas are simple ones and require a spark of inspiration to turn it into a masterpiece.
One song Tez Cadey is known for is ‘Seve’ - by many standards it is a masterpiece. Having been released 5 years ago, the song is still steadily rising in numbers across multiple platforms and nearing 200 million Spotify streams and 800 million across all platforms! We asked Tez what inspired him to produce that hit track and if he felt it was going to be as big as it became. He told us, “I had a feeling it would be a little bigger than my previous releases but nowhere close to where it's now. Like many of my more successful tracks, ‘Seve’ was written in a couple of hours straight, on my laptop. It just felt so natural, I love it when it goes that way. I hate spending too much time laying down the basic idea for a track because I find it loses its purpose very quickly then.”
Nothing is stopping Tez Cadey from continuing to make unbelievable progress in his musical production and he has the right mentality for a successful career. It’s always interesting to see what drives artists to stay motivated throughout their careers. We asked him what those driving factors were on a daily basis to which he said, “What motivates me is really making music and releasing it out there. I tend to forget this a lot but I'm still blown away by the idea of creating music on a laptop in an apartment. It almost feels like cheating, when you think you needed millions and a professional studio to do so before.” He’s not wrong, but to most entry-level artists in their early career, this is monumental in terms of saving time and money in the world of production.
For some, the aspect of doing music full time seems impossible to many. Most will give up on it completely after a few years or seeing it as just a hobby. For others, it’s something that takes time and dedication until you reach financial stability as an artist. The road is difficult, and we asked Tez when he felt like he was on the right path to which he replied, “It sort of just happened. I was still a student at the time and over a month or two I had really started to gather a following on SoundCloud. My remixes were doing pretty good and I had just released independently my track 'Coastal Cat'. The moment I really realized I was on the right path professionally was my first paid gig. They flew me over to some other city in France to play at a college party. I was 19 and I remember looking by the plane window over excited thinking how surreal this was.” Not many people have the opportunity to experience these things, but we can imagine how rewarding it is to be properly compensated for your time to leave the studio and DJ your music. One thing most also forget is that some producers have to be pulled out of the studio to DJ during times where the focus is primarily on the music production. Yet, the demand for these amazing producers is there, and eventually that hard work pays off in the end like it did for Tez Cadey. From college parties to major concerts and festivals, he has most certainly come a long way since his first gig.
Tez has the vision and the potential to work with some of the best in electronic music and it’s only a matter of time before we see his name up there next to the greatest artists on songs. We asked what his dream collaboration would be and he said “Calvin Harris, Diplo, Lost Frequencies, Don Diablo, Kungs, Madeon, Michael Calfan... There are so many producers out there I'd like to work with.” The options for Tez Cadey continue to open up as he continues to work with others and expands his creativity.
Of course the insane, unprecedented times of 2020 have impacted career moves for many artists around the globe. We asked Tez what he’s had to do to continue growing as an artist, to which he replied, “It feels like the whole music industry is suspended. I actually think now is a great opportunity for new artists to emerge as the bigger ones are not touring the world and taking as much room as before. But then not being able to link with my fans is tough to be honest. It is starting to feel like we've been stuck like this since forever.” It’s tough as most collaborations have switched to zoom calls and the element of connecting with fans in live shows is something that most artists miss. Hopefully we can return to those concerts very soon.
The music that Tez has chosen to make can resonate with people of all ages, definitely bringing good vibes through his music which he describes “joyful, melodic and nostalgic.” Tez Cadey is the guy for mood boosting music while maintaining that authentic feel. Besides the inspiration that comes from his heroes, we asked Tez what the best personal and/or professional advice you've ever received would be and he replied "Nobody cares." This is an absolutely solid answer, and I would definitely agree with this as well. The music industry is constantly moving, and you can’t get caught up with what other people think of your music. If you believe in it, then stick to your plan and work with others to ensure you proceed down the right path. Believe in yourself and you will find things start to work out as you tune out the negativity and haters, channeling your energy into your craft.
Over time, Tez has taken moments to reflect on his hard work and how he approaches making music. So when we asked Tez what advice he would give to himself a couple years ago he said he would tell himself, “Keep it up dude but don't forget to take breaks sometimes. And don't overthink it, just make some music, it's as simple as that.” Not overly complicated it seems, but for a legend, he understands the importance of efficiency and not getting overwhelmed with being caught up in a writer/producer’s block.
We’ve all made mistakes in the music industry or have failed at some point. Sometimes we also manage to fall into the right place at the right time. Either way when preparation meets opportunity, good things can happen. Tez responded to his best & worst business deal with, “My first deal ever was with some very unprofessional record label. I signed two EPs on it. Came looking for my money a few years after when things started to pick up but they quickly stopped answering my emails and never paid me my royalties. They still haven't. Unfortunately there are a lot of these still running on beatport and taking advantage of young producers like I once was. My best deal wasn't actually a business deal but just meeting my current team. We've been working together for 7 years already.” The beauty of teamwork is something most would say is very fundamental to an artist’s development and progress. It’s amazing how it worked out for Tez the way it did and we are excited to see his progress with the help of his stellar team in the years to come.
So, what’s next? We asked Tez about his upcoming projects to which he replied, “I'd really like to open up the project and create a wider range of music. Making electronic music has been my life for the past ten years and I'm looking forward to collaborating more with other artists and singers from different genres than mine. I've already started to produce for other people like Gina Livia and it has been a blast. Many more songs still to come next year so stay put!
At the end of the day, Tez Cadey is one to keep your eye on. With the world still dancing to ‘Seve,’ we are excited to see him continue to roll out mood boosting tunes and more hits for our generation and the years beyond.
