We join Marissa, better known as Mari, following up her latest release ‘Movin’ now streaming on all major platforms. We asked Marissa what her inspiration was for her upcoming projects in 2021. She shares…
“My inspiration for my music this year is vulnerability; I am doing a lot of storytelling with these songs about who I am, how I love, and how I move forward with life obstacles. I don’t think even the closest people in my life know this side of me, and this year I am choosing to let those parts of myself show. I am finally saying how I feel, and it’s taken 22 years of patience, learning, and confidence to do that. I believe artists who aren't afraid to tell their story and share their pain, give listeners hope in knowing they’re not alone - and provide them with a different perspective on how to navigate their feelings - that’s what I wanted from the songs I have coming out this year.”
When it comes to ‘Movin’ however — this track truly means everything to Marissa Lucia. The single dives into a story laying out Mari’s internal struggles as an artist and individual constantly questioning if she is doing enough or even the right thing chasing her dreams as an artist. But that did not stop Marissa Lucia. She confidently shares that this track is about putting one foot in front of the other and being confident in her ability to take control of her future and manifest her dreams as a creative and artist.
It is clear that Marissa Lucia is driven by emotion, passion, and pride in her work. With that said, it is important to understand what motivates an artist like Marissa to wake up and do what she does every single day as a creative, artist, and musician.
Marissa Lucia shares…
“The motivation behind a lot of my songs stems from the ability to finally be heard & understood. I've always been ridiculed for my sensitivity, not explaining myself enough, or that I care too much. That's when I began to steer away from the things that made me feel connected to songwriting or music; instead, I clung to other passions like basketball or academics because I didn't want to tap into that emotional side of myself. I'd create in secret and never fully commit to bringing songs to life. Now, I wake up everyday to find ways to unlock that light inside me, more importantly, find the right chords, melodies, lyrics - that can help someone else process their emotions. I have a big heart for people, and I believe the art I create can help make connections for healing in another person's life. Sure, I hope that it happens to be a number one hit, but if I helped someone through their pain, I'd take that over any grammy.”
Without question, Marissa Lucia is an artist with a heart far bigger than people give her credit for at a glance. Music is a way for her to empathize with those going through the struggles she faced throughout her life. This is her way of giving back and changing lives — a truly admirable and passionate connection to one’s goals and ambitions in life.
To get a better understanding of where Marissa Lucia imagines herself in the future, we asked who belonged to her dream collaboration or project. Marissa shared, “I would love to write with Ryan Tedder and produce or collaborate a song with H.E.R. — I love every single one of their projects - and you can hear the “genius” in their work.” Further, we inquired about Marissa’s favorite track of her own to which she shared is on a hard drive stashed away after a garage recording session that will be released on SoundCloud someday for her die hard fans!
Fan love aside, this last year was an incredible challenge for Marissa Lucia like many other rising independent artists. We asked Marissa how COVID and the pandemic impacted her career and decisions as an artist and brand.
Marissa shares…
“COVID-19 impacted my career immensely, especially when it comes to live performances. I had a consistent gig at a local restaurant, but they closed due to the pandemic. So for a couple of weeks, I went restaurant to restaurant all over the Orange County area to see which ones were still open and had live music. I checked back in everyday by phone and or in-person to see if there had been any changes. As a musician, that’s a good portion of your income that I no longer saw every month. I also just released a single in late June of 2020 that I was hoping to perform live for an audience but had to rely a lot on live streams via Instagram and Zoom. I tried posting more covers to keep reaching different audiences, but it wasn’t the same. Just when I was about to give up, I ended up meeting my friends at a wine bar in downtown Fullerton, where I had the chance to talk to the owner, who let me perform there towards the end of the year. I was so grateful.”
She continues…
“In terms of growing my brand, I’ve worked on expanding my artistry by learning how to produce instrumentals, engineer vocals, and improve my songwriting. I said to myself that there was no point in holding back - and I think that disregard for fear has made these next songs coming out so pure. All in all, I’ve genuinely made an effort to make the most out of this pandemic.”
For Marissa, it was crucial for her to not be held back by the countless adversities she faced this last year starting off her solo artist career. Continuing to innovate, relying on partnerships, and leveraging her network were crucial for her ability to continue to thrive as an artist, gain new fans, and foster her existing relationships and fanbase all at the same time! That is not only a sign of a dedicated and passionate individual - but a true a star in the making.
