Julian Palermo, better known as JulezP (@JulezP), grew up in Haverhill, MA just north of Boston, where his DJ career took off and he embarked on his artist career. He’s here with us today to share his journey.

First, we asked Julian where he found his passion for his artist career and he gave us a reply. He shared, “In 2014, my friends and I were watching Hardwell live on Ultra live stream and were raving about how badly they wanted to go. I had a different mindset, I wanted to be that guy on stage that people from all over the world came to see. From there I downloaded Ableton Live and got my first DJ controller.” In September of his junior year of high school, he broke his foot. During the recovery period he threw himself into making mixes and remixes and started to play the keys. This was the true beginning of JulezP. Practicing every single day, he had one objective in mind and that was to become the best possible producer he could be.

After high school, he went to college in Philadelphia at St. Joseph’s University. Life was great, and he certainly was a leader on the rowing team and very social in the student community. Before his senior year, he made the decision to take a gap year and focus on his music career.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the right niche market to tap into when you start to produce electronic music and sometimes it is difficult to determine where to start. In some sense, one of his routine visits down to Boston brought about some clarity into which genre he was going to focus on. Julian mentioned “my dream collaboration would be with the one and only NGHTMRE. I saw him live for the first time three years ago on the Boat Cruise Summer Series in Boston, Massachusetts and it was by far the best show I’ve ever been to. He introduced me to bass music and since then I’ve been all about exploring different genres.” With the House energy of ‘BRING IT BACK,’ we are looking forward to seeing more out of the genre he considers his forte.

We asked Julian how he felt about having live performances ripped from the schedule and how it affected his music career to which he responded, “the biggest adjustment was not having the crowd there for feedback on my unreleased tracks. I would use the crowd's reaction to decide if the song was ready to be put out and since that was taken away, I had to rely on what I like.”

Having met Julian on the Boat Cruise Summer Series in Boston in August of 2018, I had the chance to really understand who he was and what value he placed on live performances through conversation. It was also very easy to see that he was one of the friendliest people from Boston, well, north of Boston, but you get the point. We asked him about his style of music to which he said, “I try to create a fun, energetic, and passionate vibe for my fans. I put everything into my performances and production. Each show I push myself to do something different from the last. I constantly try out new music that I have no idea what the response will be just to keep the crowd on their toes.” It’s this energy and decision making in the live performance scene that has set him above his peers who are afraid to step out of their comfort zone while on stage.

Julian says his greatest advice came from his grandfather who said, “You never know who’s in the crowd watching.” He still remembers these words from his grandfather who watched him in sports early on that have stuck with him to this day, directly applying to his performances, despite attendance numbers or even livestream viewership.

JulezP said just two short years ago he found himself in his first out of state show in Philadelphia, PA opening for ARTY at NOTO nightclub. The advice he would have given himself then from what he knows now would be, “if I want to move forward from opening slots locally to playing across the country, then I need to have more original GOOD music and a consistent loyal following.” It’s this simple logic that has led to the buildup of JulezP’s stockpile of excellent music exploding through the rest of 2020.

His next release lined up for a gritty house track called “AREA 69” which drops August 28th and plans on releasing new music every 3-4 weeks on his label Tsunami R3cords. He is consistently playing live streams, demoing new music, and interacting with his fans who he deeply cares about.
