Los Angeles, CA — Platinum selling UK singer songwriter James TW releases bittersweet pop single ‘Butterflies’ out now on all major platforms. Watch the ‘Butterflies’ music video on YouTube here!
‘Butterflies’ opens with a hypnotic, echoing guitar riff that leads into a synth swell. Overlaying resonant ostinato, James TW wistfully describes how everything reminds him of his ex, from yellow flowers in his window to songs they used to share. Floating, melodic synths and catchy snaps bring in the pre-chorus and he admits he has difficulty moving on from the relationship.
During the chorus, James TW lists his fruitless attempts to get over his ex and confesses that she still gives him butterflies. His voice is tender yet pained, reflecting his frustration and his conflicted yearning for the past. The track begins to intensify with the simultaneous entrance of the rhythm section, consisting of a pulsating kick drum and an undulating bass line.
James TW continues to earnestly recount his regrets, this time with the addition of back up singers and a jingling tambourine. The last minute of the song is an explosion of harmony and rhythm: a lush choir and fiery drum fills accompany James TW’s fervent, repeated confessions of his lingering affection. The track ends the same way it began: a single, reverberating guitar riff overlaying a faint synth fades into silence.
In a paradoxical contrast to the song’s serious, emotional lyricism, the music video is lighthearted and almost amusing. James TW poses in a photo booth, wearing a different outlandish costume in each shot. He cycles through a number of exaggerated characters with a stony, yet soft expression. These numerous identities mirror his many attempts to move on from his past relationship and suggest that he is trying to outrun his true self in doing so. He struggles to recognize his own emotions, preferring to bury them behind a series of masks. In trying to get over his ex, he feels like he is performing a role.
James TW currently has over 8 million monthly listeners on Spotify, has generated over 2 billion streams, sold out headline shows on multiple continents, and received acclaim from Billboard, Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, and many others.
